OpenAI Japan CEO reveals insights on GPT-Next, an AI model 100 times more powerful than GPT-4

At the recent KDDI Summit 2024, OpenAI Japan CEO Tadao Nagasaki shared exciting insights into the future of AI. He revealed that OpenAI’s upcoming model, GPT-Next, will be 100 times more powerful than GPT-4. Unlike past improvements driven by sheer computing power, GPT-Next’s leap in performance will come from advancements in architecture, utilizing a smaller version of OpenAI’s secretive Project Strawberry.

Speaking at the summit, Nagasaki emphasized OpenAI’s dedication to AI and communication technologies, highlighting the company’s ambitious vision. He also noted that ChatGPT has surpassed 200 million active users as of August, becoming the fastest software in history to reach this milestone. According to Nagasaki, ChatGPT Enterprise is gaining traction, with more businesses adopting the platform globally.

OpenAI now employs around 2,000 people worldwide, with half of its workforce focused on AI development. Nagasaki also explained why Japan was chosen as OpenAI’s first base in Asia, attributing it to the country’s strong history of embracing innovation and new technologies.

During his speech, Nagasaki compared the future GPT-Next model to previous versions like GPT-3 and GPT-4, underscoring the exponential growth of AI technology. He concluded by sharing his own journey, having served as the CEO of Amazon Web Services Japan for over a decade before taking on the leadership of OpenAI Japan in April 2024.

According to Nagasaki, GPT-Next will represent a significant leap forward in AI, signaling OpenAI’s continued dominance in the industry.
