Meta’s Orion AR Glasses: Compact Design and Revolutionary Technology Impresses at Connect Conference
Meta’s latest augmented reality (AR) glasses, Orion, are grabbing attention for their sleek, compact design rather than flashy graphics. At the Meta Connect conference, CNBC’s tech correspondent Julia Boorstin highlighted how lightweight and comfortable the prototype felt, a significant improvement over bulkier devices like Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro headsets.
Unveiled by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the Orion glasses offer a glimpse into the future of computing within the metaverse. Unlike VR headsets that immerse users in virtual worlds, Orion overlays digital holograms onto real-world settings, blending physical and digital experiences seamlessly. This is achieved using advanced silicon carbide lenses and mini projectors integrated into the glasses, creating holograms that feel natural and unobtrusive.
Boorstin noted the device’s comfortable design, likening it to wearing a pair of slightly heavy regular glasses. She also praised the wristband controller that accurately tracks hand movements, allowing easy navigation through apps like Instagram, Facebook, and games.
One standout demo showed how the AR glasses could identify food ingredients and display digital recipe suggestions, while another projected a 3D video call, providing a realistic, immersive experience. These demos showcased Meta’s vision for integrating AR technology into everyday life.
Boorstin emphasized that Meta’s R&D for Orion will likely impact future products, including Quest headsets and Ray-Ban smart glasses, as the company strives to make AR technology more efficient and user-friendly.
